One Great Cat

I know it probably sounds really mellodramatic, but it's the truth: I'm beyond sad.

I just got off the phone with our vet and our cat Sebastian died today. (He got really sick Sunday--howling. We took him in on Monday. They ran tests; kidney failure. He had a seizure and died shortly afterward . . . this afternoon.)

We loved Sebastian.

And more importantly, Sebastian loved Dave.

You see, we got Sebastian and Fatty (oh, and Fatty's wife--whom I never really understood) when the kids were just tiny. Itty. Bitty. The cats all came together--from the same shelter. It was the kind of thing where I went in looking to rescue one cat and left with three big felines (I'm sure the shelter "ladies" got commission for that adoption--it was a grandslam.).

But seriously, Sebastian was just the perfect cat. He was friendly. He was kind. He was a good looking cat (black and white). And he meowed/talked a lot. Particularly when Dave was around. He loved Dave (and tried to sleep or sit next to him ANYTIME Dave was in the room).

I think Sebastian's love for Dave began when we made the move from LA to Provo a few years ago. You see, we weren't sure we could have the cats in our new home, so they stayed in shelter-care while we got settled in. Then as a surprise to me/kids, one weekend when Dave was in LA, he picked up the cats and made the 10 hour drive to Utah WITH THEM IN THE CAB OF HIS TRUCK.

Can you imagine a 10-hour car ride with 3 cats? It sounds like purgatory to me--and I like cats. (Dave's medium on 'em, so this was a huge thing to do for the kids/me, bringing them up.)

At any rate, Sebastian must have seen Dave as a kind of saving grace from that moment forward--because there really never was a time when he left Dave's side after that.

I wish he didn't have to go so soon.

We are going to miss him so much.
